Sheer Impossibility

Sooner could a fish live high up in a tree,
or perhaps a climbing cat
dwell deep beneath the sea,
Than a man, made out of sod,
live in Paradise with God,
lest the man be born again and washed spotless of his sin.

Lest a man be born again
and washed spotless of his sin,
he is but a shadow soul,
but One died to make him whole,
Where he can live and breathe
in light so truly pure,
the very light of God, in which
no darkness can endure.

“Therefore, if any man be in Christ
he is a new creature;
old things have passed away;
behold, all things are become new.”

I Corinthians 5:17

This sculpture won “Second Best of Show” at the 5th annual Ward Fish Carving Competition in 2005. Symmetry of grain, repeated lines in both the fish and base, as well as striking burls in the two pieces of wood all work together to try and capture the beauty and grace of one of God’s most spectacular creations.
