The Guardian

In humble stance before the throne,
waiting for a word,
God’s mighty warring messengers
ever serve the risen Lord.

These ministers are spirits
in glorious attire,
their brightness from another world
appears as flames of fire

Sent by God to minister
to salvation’s needy heirs,
the Lord’s hand moves to send them
in answer to our prayers.

In their glory they’re so awesome
men fall as dead in fear,
but in humbly serving strangers
we’ve served angels unaware.

They will not take our worship,
but always turn our eyes,
back to the the God of glory,
our Lord beyond the skies.

And remind us He is awesome,
to fix our eyes on Jesus’ face.
For you see they’re only angels,
but we’re the objects of God’s grace.

This unique and inspiring depiction of one of God’s angels was originally carved in wood and subsequently cast in bronze. The mesquite base (a sculpture in itself) was carved specifically for the bronze and incorporate many of the same lines and movements. Many of the lines that form the robes of the guardian are repeated in the wooden portion of the sculpture. This unique approach provides a complimentary cohesiveness between the two sculptures. In biblical times polished bronze was literally worth its weight in gold (Ezra 8:27). Having worked on several polished bronzes I can understand why.

This sculpture is a depiction of one of God’s holy Angels, the sword symbolizing his ability to war and protect. The poem written for this piece uses the glimpses provided through God’s word to accurately describe these heavenly messengers.

Ezekiel 8:2 “Then I looked and behold, a likeness as the appearance of a man; from his loins and downward there was the appearance of fire, and from his loins and upward the appearance of brightness, like the appearance of glowing metal.” NASB
